Matt & Brandy Dickinson CZU Fire Relief
Donation protected
Friends and family, we are hoping to raise as much money as possible to get two very special people, Matt & Brandy Dickinson, as well as their amazing two kiddos, back on their feet after losing everything in the CZU Lightning Complex Fire. Brandy is my best friend, soul sister, and one of the most special people you will ever meet. She has a way of shining a beautiful light on every person she comes in contact with. My heart breaks for the loss her and her family are going through.
Matt, Brandy, Lonan, and HollyAnn evacuated Tuesday evening, August 18th, from Boulder Creek, CA, with only an hour's notice to leave the area. Gathering belongings was challenging because of the extreme heat and smoke. While packing up the cars, they were hit with burning embers and could not breathe because the air was filled with heavy smoke. You can imagine how horrifying this was for the kids! Terrified for their family's safety, they quickly left with only a few clothing items, their dog, and their bearded dragon, hoping the fire would be put out to allow a quick return. They attempted to gather more belongings 2 days later, but security checkpoints turned them away. Matt and Brandy found out the next day that they had lost their home in its entirety in the CZU Lightning Complex Fire .... along with many other friends in their Boulder Creek community.
The Dickinson's are currently displaced. They are trying to stay in their community so their children can stay in their school district with their friends and Brandy can continue her work with survivors of brain injuries. This family has lived in the San Lorenzo Valley for 10 years, and they have contributed many years of volunteer service in their community and their county watershed projects. They have worked to raise awareness about single use plastics and the protection of the watershed. They even secured a grant for their local elementary school's green school project. The Dickinson's volunteer with Save our Shores, local school events, and spend the rest of their time surfing, hiking, biking, and camping with their children. They love their community, the outdoor recreational activities in Santa Cruz county, and putting forth the extra efforts to protect the environment they love, which is how they have raised their children.
Brandy is a Speech Language Pathologist and has dedicated her career to helping brain injury survivors and their caregivers. She is the Director of Clinic Education at San Jose State University's Communication Disorders and Sciences program. She starts a new endeavor at Cabrillo College in Aptos in the Stroke and Disability Learning Center this Fall as the Speech and Communication Teacher. It is imperative for her community that she stay in the area to help survivors of brain injuries live their fullest lives.
