THIS CAMPAIGN MUST REMAIN ANONYMOUS AND PRIVATE. DO NOT SHARE THIS LINK PUBLICLY OR ON SOCIAL MEDIA. I'm fundraising on behalf of a dear friend and her toddler son in Vermont. Vermont is a small place, everyone knows everyone. The information in this "story" is sensitive, identifying, and will put both my friend and her son in danger if placed in the wrong hands. If you wish to share this campaign (with other trusted individuals only), please only do so via messenger apps or email. The story is this: My friend is profoundly physically disabled and wheelchair-bound. Her disability requires that she have licensed caregivers in her home 24/7 to meet her medical needs. She's in the midst of a custody dispute with the father of her child, who is a serial abuser. He's previously been convicted of domestic assault and battery, possesses countless weapons, and consistently shows signs of dangerous mental instability. He has previously stalked, abused, and threatened my friend extensively. He continues to abuse and threaten both my friend and her son in every manner he can. The Vermont courts have denied multiple applications for Relief From Abuse Orders because the more recent threats of physical harm to my friend have been made through third parties. Vermont DCFS has also declined to intervene in the child's visitation schedule with his father due to an absence of visible marks on him indicating abuse. Their final child custody hearing is scheduled to span two full days and will almost definitely result in the mother and child being allowed to move out of state, ceasing his visitation with his father immediately. The Vermont Family Court system has thoughtlessly scheduled these two days a month apart from each other instead of consecutively. Naturally, the evidence presented at the first of these court dates will be damning and enraging to the child's father. So, the month in between these two dates will be extremely high risk for the father acting out violently against the mother and child.  The father has previously broken into the mother's home and has made countless threats to her physical safety. Additionally, her disability renders her unable to flee in the case of a break-in or arson (both of which he has threatened). It takes about 15 minutes for her to get out of bed, and several more to enter her vehicle to leave her property. The only way my friend will be able to ensure her own, her son's, and her caregivers' safety for the month in between court dates is to leave her home completely.  I've personally contacted every single domestic violence and child abuse advocacy organization in the state of Vermont and beyond. There is no organization that's able to provide financial aid to her in this situation. There also is not a single women's shelter in Vermont that's adequately handicap accessible and meets her basic physical needs. So, we've come to the conclusion that she will need to stay at either a handicap accessible AirBnB or hotel for the month. These are hard to come by (there is only one such AirBnB within reasonable driving distance of her home) and we need to reserve her stay as soon as possible. The cost of this will likely be upwards of $10,000.00 in total.  My friend is currently drowning in the legal fees resulting from this multiple-year-long, volatile custody dispute. She can't afford this expense. In truth, she shouldn't have to pay for it anyway. Our most vulnerable citizens should be kept more proactively safe from their abusers.  Sadly, the state of Vermont has failed my friend and her son in every way possible. We're now asking our community and support systems to help keep them safe by donating to the cost of their safe housing for the month in between court dates.
