John Cooney's - Campaign UPDATE

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,

******UPDATE: It is with our hearts full of joy and gratitude we share the news of John and family were safely flown to California on June 13th. Angel Flight NE,  a non-profit organization "honored to serve the courageous men, women, children and their families who have an incredible will to live" came to the rescue and were able to find a pilot and aircraft to fly them safely and at no cost. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing Angel Flight was, from the mission coordinator, Michele Varny, to the CEO Fr. Larry Camerlin, everyone join resources and time to help out. As Angel Flight mentioned on their newsletter as well as on a segment aired by Channel 5 news this was "the largest single mission ever coordinated" by them.

All the funds generously donated on this campaign will now be used to cover medical expenses. As you can imagine, John's care is long term, very involving and expensive. Not all of those expenses are 100% covered by insurance. So, please rest assured that your generosity was not in vain. Although, we raised an incredible amount we were still short for the type of medical transportation John required. We will be forever grateful to Angel Flight NE who made John's transportation possible, and to all of you who did not skip a beat and embraced to the opportunity to help wholeheartedly. *******

As many of you may know, John Cooney (9 years old) was diagnosed with an inoperable bithalamic brain tumor in 2018.

Since then, John received several rounds of chemotherapy, neurosurgeries, and endured a month of proton therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital. In the months to follow, he responded well, recovering his abilities to speak and walk. However, in January 2020, John was admitted to the hospital again to revise a shunt that he has in his brain to counter hydrocephalus. That hospital stay brought with it a series of complications and resulted in John and Liz spending four months in the hospital. During that time, COVID-19 hit, which complicated everything. John is now slowly recovering at home.

It has been a long, difficult journey for the Cooney family, Padrig, Liz, and their two daughters Rebecca and Naomi aged 12 and 5. Liz has been out of work since November 2018 to care for John. But rising medical expenses prompted Liz to started job searching. In February 2020, Liz was offered and accepted a position as assistant head of a K-12 school in California which is an ideal situation for the Cooney family as they can live on the school campus and all the children can attend. Likewise, John's Boston medical team believe California offers the same level of care as MGH as well as several options for holistic treatments currently unavailable in the East Coast.

The Cooneys need to relocate to California at the end of June 2020.

The mode of transportation that best protects John's fragile and immune-compromised state is medical air transportation by a chartered flight from Boston to Los Angeles. However, the cost of medical travel is way beyond what the Cooney's can afford right now. We, the Sheldons, are asking for your help to aid the Cooney family in safely landing in their new home. We understand these are challenging times for many of us, but please consider donating to our Go Fund Me to cover the costs of medical air transportation for John. Any help is appreciated.

In gratitude,
