My Aunt, Patricia O’Leary, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She has invasive ductal carcinoma (breast cancer) which has spread to her lymph nodes and is ER positive and Her2 positive. She will undergo one more surgery and then start one year of chemotherapy and 6 1/2 weeks of radiation. Her treatment site is more than 80 miles away in San Diego, and since her doctor has told her it is unwise to commute each day, she has to find lodging during much of that time. She was able to get a low-cost lodging through UCSD, but it still will be expensive. If she does commute each day, she will be stuck with high gas costs. She will also need to spend hundreds on supplies for her home. Because she started a new job last year, she has not yet built up enough sick leave to cover the time off, and if she runs out of leave she will have to go on disability, and only receive 55% of her pay or take a lot of unpaid leave days. Patti has not only made a huge impact in so many lives, but she has always sacrificed and given up so much of herself in order to take care of those around her. I am really hoping that now she will be blessed by others.
