Frying Pan Tower Remote HF Project
Donation protected
Frying Pan Tower , a historic Coast Guard light station turned adventure destination, has stood as a beacon 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina for decades. Now, Kees Van Oosbree, W0AAE and Nathan Wood, K4NHW have the opportunity to transform it into something even more incredible—a hub for amateur radio communications!
We are raising funds to install a permanent internet remote HF amateur radio station on the tower, providing a unique offshore location for operators to connect, experiment, and engage in emergency communications when needed.
Why an Amateur Radio Station?
- ️Remote DX Location – The tower’s offshore position in international waters surrounded by conductive saltwater makes it a prime site for rare and sought-after DX.
- STEM & Education – We aim to inspire youth and enthusiasts in amateur radio through unique internet remote access to an incredible DX location.
- Emergency & Disaster Comms – In the event of hurricanes or maritime emergencies, this station could provide a crucial communications link when other systems fail.
- Public Engagement – We plan to share amateur radio to the many eyes and ears drawn to the tower via the popular social media sites.
How Will Funds Be Used?
✅ Installation & Maintenance – Travel costs and upkeep.
✅ Radio Equipment – Miscellaneous equipment.
