Just days ago, he was walking, laughing, and living life as usual. Now, my uncle is trapped in a hospital bed, unable to move, barely able to breathe. Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is attacking his body, and without urgent treatment, it could take everything.
It all started with what seemed like a simple virus. He got better—or so we thought. Then, out of nowhere, his legs started failing him. Soon, he couldn’t stand. Then, his hands went numb. He could no longer feel his feet, no longer grasp a cup, no longer climb a single stair. His body was shutting down, and we had no idea why. By the time we rushed him to the hospital, the paralysis was spreading, and we were terrified.
After countless tests, doctors confirmed our worst fear: Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare and life-threatening disorder where the immune system turns against the nerves, rapidly leading to paralysis. In severe cases, it shuts down the ability to move and breathe. It can progress in days, sometimes hours. He is now undergoing aggressive treatment, but the road ahead is uncertain.
The Overwhelming Medical Costs
The worst part? He is a visitor here—without insurance, without coverage, and now, drowning in medical bills. The costs are staggering:
- Hospital Stay (5 days and counting): $3,580 to $5,375 per night
- Lumbar Puncture (for diagnosis)
- Multiple MRIs, CT Scans, X-rays, Blood Tests, and Electrocardiographs
- Special Blood Tests to monitor his condition
- IV Infusion of Privigen (400mL costs $6,367, 3 bottles administered so far, and he needs more)
- Plasmapheresis (blood plasma transfer) to stop the progression of the disease
- Intensive Physical Therapy—after treatment, he won’t be able to walk right away and will need extensive rehab to regain mobility
These costs are devastating for any family—but for my mom, a single mother with a very low income, this is completely impossible to afford. Everything falls on her, and she simply does not have the resources to cover this. We are doing everything we can, but we are desperate.
