Hi, I’m Nalin, a recent physics grad from the U.S. with big dreams, a laser focus (literally, optics is my thing), and an acceptance letter from a top-tier German university. I’ve worked hard to get to this point: late nights, early mornings, and too many integrals to count.

This fall, I’m supposed to start my master’s program in Physics specializing in Optics and Photonics in Germany. It’s an incredible opportunity that could launch a career working on cutting-edge research such as lasers, quantum systems, and possibly even invisibility cloaks (you never know).

But there’s one catch: Germany requires international students to prove they can support themselves by placing about $12,000 into a special “blocked account” before a visa is granted. That’s the problem. I have a solid start but not nearly enough.

What happened?

Immediately after graduation, I intended to start working full-time to save every cent. I applied to everything I could: retail, warehouse, fast food, janitorial work. But I live in a part of the country where the job market is brutal, especially for short-term work. Despite applying to over 100 jobs (yes really, over 100), I never got hired. Not for lack of trying. It’s just the reality right now.

The pitch

I’m not asking for a handout, I’m asking for a chance to do great things. A career of research, invention, and discovery is on the verge of happening. We’re talking beneficial work that will have a lasting impact. I just need a little help to get to Germany so I can make it happen.
