From Uber to J.D.: Support Mozes’s Path to Law School

Back in November 2024, I called an Uber home from my office and was picked up by a man named Mozes Kakou. What began as a routine ride home quickly turned into one of the most meaningful conversations I’ve had in recent memory.

Mozes shared that he came to the United States in 2003 as a refugee from the Ivory Coast, fleeing a brutal civil war that erupted after a failed coup d’état. He arrived here with hope and determination, carrying the weight of what he had left behind and the dreams of what could lie ahead. One of those dreams—his most enduring one—was to become an attorney in the U.S.

As we talked about life, family, and purpose, Mozes opened up about the obstacles that had kept that dream out of reach—years of hard work, sacrifice, and raising a family while making ends meet. Still, something about our conversation seemed to ignite a spark. We exchanged numbers and stayed in touch. A few weeks later, he reached out with questions about law school.

Fast forward to March 2025 – he called to share that he took the January LSAT and was in the process of preparing his applications and Personal Statements for Villanova, Drexel, Temple, and Widener Law.

Mozes is preparing to take the LSAT again this August or September, determined to improve his score and move one step closer to his life-long dream of becoming an attorney. As a former refugee from the Ivory Coast, now raising two young children and driving Uber to make ends meet, Mozes has never had an easy road—but he’s never let that stop him.

Despite financial challenges, his commitment to this dream is unwavering. To help lift some of the burden, I’ve decided to cover the cost of one-on-one LSAT tutoring so he can focus on what matters most: preparing for the exam—not worrying about how he’ll afford it. We’re aiming to raise $4,500 to cover the full cost of Mozes’s LSAT journey—this includes one-on-one tutoring, essential study materials, and the exam itself. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps lighten the load and brings Mozes closer to achieving a goal he’s held onto for years.

Every so often, we meet someone whose story stays with us—someone whose determination, humility, and hope leave a lasting impact. For me, Mozes is one of those people. What began as a brief conversation became a powerful reminder of how resilience can endure through hardship, and how even a small act of support can help change the course of someone’s life.

Thank you all for considering a donation to help Mozes take this next step. Your generosity means more than you know.
