On a beautiful spring day—Wednesday, April 9th—Matt was doing what he loved most: mountain biking in Nevada City on the Talon Show trail, one he’s ridden many times with his crew. For Matt, the trail was more than dirt and trees—it was his escape, his happy place.
On his second run, around 12:15 p.m., Matt suffered a serious crash. A fellow rider found him unresponsive and called 911. Cal-Fire arrived quickly, and he was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Trauma Center.
Thanks to support from the mountain biking community, we learned that Matt likely went over the bars after a familiar jump. Despite wearing a helmet, the impact caused a traumatic brain injury.
Matt is currently in a coma. Doctors diagnosed a Severe Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)—a type of injury that disrupts the brain's ability to send signals. He also suffered brain bruising, hemorrhaging, a seizure, and a neck fracture. Right now, it’s too early to know the extent of his recovery. The first and most critical step is for Matt to wake up.
But there is hope.
Matt is strong, healthy, and fiercely determined. He was found relatively quickly, received care, and his helmet remained intact. Most importantly, he has a loving wife, two young amazing daughters, and a whole community behind him.
