Almost 35 years ago my ‘sister by another mother’, (the only sister I ever had) gave birth to my nephew Chauncey. Though he was 6 weeks early, he appeared to be in good health. Later that same day, his health started to decline, and at five days old, this tiny, five pound baby was having open heart surgery for a congenital heart defect called tricuspid atresia. In short, that means his blood could not get to the lungs to be oxygenated. His right ventricle was underdeveloped, as well.
A special artificial shunt made of gortex had to be flown in from Texas, because he was so small. Chauncey’s next surgery came about t a year later, just after his first birthday, because he was retaining fluid. His other surgeries include the Glenn shunt, the Fontan procedure and Blalock-Taussig shunt. Chauncey was 10 yrs old when he had his last surgery.
Fast forward to five years ago when Chauncey was in A-fib, and in danger of having a stroke. He was put on blood thinners for 18 months, and then they finally shocked his heart to get it back in rhythm, which worked for a time, but ultimately failed as well. Chauncey has now been referred to the fine doctors at the Mayo Clinic because of his complicated heart issues, and we are all hoping and praying for a ‘fix’ for him.
Chauncey is a wonderfully humble, Christian man now, with a wife and three small children who need their daddy around as long as possible. This is where we can all help: I started this Gofundme campaign to help Chauncey’s family with the certain costs of this trip and medical procedures that will follow. Please join me in helping this young family.
