From the Ashes, We Build Our Oak: Help Us Save Our Family

My name is Katie, and I am writing this with a heart that is both breaking and full of hope. For months, I have lived in a state of quiet desperation, three states away in Florida, watching through a screen as the person who means the most to me fights a battle she should never have to fight alone.

Laura is my sister by choice. When I lost my biological mother, her Mum became my anchor—she fed me, she raised me, and she loved me when I had no one else. Now, they are trapped in a crisis in Tennessee that keeps me awake at night, paralyzed by the distance between us.

Right now, Laura and Mum are living in a literal death trap. Their rental sits on a steep hill, cut off from the world by crumbling concrete stairs. After a series of devastating hospitalizations, Mum lost her mobility and is now entirely dependent on a wheelchair. They have survived a house fire before; they know how fast life can turn to ash. If a fire broke out today, there is no way out. Laura physically cannot get Mum’s wheelchair down those stairs. They are stuck, waiting for a miracle, in a home that has become a cage.

This isn't just about a house; it’s about a woman’s soul. Mum is a trained chef who spent our entire childhood working grueling double shifts so we could survive. She sacrificed her art so we could eat. Now, she sits in her wheelchair inches away from the stove, unable to reach the burners because the kitchen is completely inaccessible. First, poverty kept her out of the kitchen. Now, architecture is keeping her out. It is a heartbreak I cannot put into words.

We are not just asking for help; we are working for our freedom. We have launched Ash & Oak Press, a media network and future publishing house designed to transform our struggle into a sustainable business that frees us from assistance forever. The "Ash" represents the struggle of chronic illness and poverty from which we are rising; the "Oak" represents the strong, resilient foundation we are trying to build. Through our channels, such as The Adaptive Chef and The Unfiltered Caregiver, we are pouring our hearts into creating a better future, but we cannot build that future while we are fighting for our lives in a house that isn't safe.

I am fighting to get out of Sarasota and up to Tennessee to be the hands and feet they need. I need to take the physical burden off Laura’s shoulders and help Mum back to the stove. Your donations will go directly toward the staggering costs of relocating a family in crisis, securing a barrier-free home where Mum can finally move safely, and helping me move across state lines to join them as their caregiver and partner.

She worked so we could eat. Now, we are fighting so she can cook. Please, help me save my family. Any amount helps us break these chains of distance and danger. If you are unable to donate, please share our story. Thank you for your humanity, your prayers, and for helping us turn our "Ash" into an "Oak."
