We performed an introductory song, our opening number Welcome to Our Valley, at the Montclair Theater Festival thanks to Vanguard Theater!
We're scheduled at Nutley Little Theater's Readers Theater on March 7, 2027 for a reading of the full musical.
Set in Chile, in 1973, a young girl, Maribel, joins the resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship when she learns her father is among the disappeared. Inspired by kind gifts from the three tricky abuelas next door, she and others first seek to gather the names of prisoners in the local detention center, then plot to help them to escape before the evil captain can move them to unknown places.
From the Abuelas' Window is a musical with a message to encourage ordinary people to do small things to make their world a better place, particularly when confronted with political oppression and human rights violations. The musical is an adaptation of the young adult novel which aimed to bring understanding of the reasons people are forced to leave their homeland and emigrate to the United States. The musical is an entertaining multi-generational story for the whole family and the songs reflect traditional Chilean music.
Our team includes Nancy Burke (book and lyrics), Ignacio Valdivia (composer and musical director) and Ed Levy (additional lyrics). Ignacio, lives in Santiago de Chile. He came to the team via the Society for Chilean Music, an international organization dedicated to Chilean music traditions.
And we're reaching out to high schools and college theater programs for student productions. We're hoping to move this musical toward professional production via entry to theatre festivals and competitions.
Minimally, we are hoping to raise $15,000. Small donations from many donors are appreciated immensely.
