From Survival to Healing: Firn's Pelvic Surgery Fund

Donation protected
Firn was found on December 19th, after neighbors reported a cat crying out in distress for hours on a street corner in Brooklyn, NY. When we arrived, we found him hiding under a trash shed just crying to himself.

After we pet him gently, he popped his head out and began to chat to us. We could instantly tell he was friendly. We could also tell he was in extremely bad shape - Firn is emaciated, dirty, covered in his own feces (due to an intestinal parasite), and he's unsteady on his feet. But this didn't stop Firn from walking right into our carrier, ready to be whisked away.

Within hours, it became clear to us that Firn might be suffering from more than emaciation. His spine curves and dips in an abnormal way. Our worst fears were confirmed when the night after we rescued him, Firn's whole demeanor changed. He went from a chatty, bright boy to quiet, laying on his side, and crying out in pain at the slightest touch. We raced him to the ER.

We learned that Firn has a severely fractured and displaced pelvis. What's heartbreaking is that the vets believe this is an old injury. But Firn is only 10 months old, hardly more than a kitten. This means that he has spent a large portion of his young life in pain.

The ER vet does not think Firn's pelvis will heal on its own - the bone fragments are displaced too far apart. We are currently working to get Firn a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon and are applying for rescue grants to help fund this surgery.

Rescue is not a money-making endeavor. We 100% rely on donations in order to get Firn and cats just like him necessary medical treatment. We hope you'll consider donating to his care - no amount is too small. Just $5 from many quickly adds up over time.

Thank you for helping us support Firn.

Please note, this fundraiser goal may increase over time as we learn more about the total costs of Firn's care.

Important transparency disclaimer: As of this fundraiser's launch, we do not yet know if Firn is a candidate for surgical repair. This will be discussed at his consultation, which we hope to have scheduled in the next week (we're calling many practices to find the next available one!). If it is found that Firn is not a candidate for surgery and we have over-fundraised, all funds donated here will help us say yes to the next rescue cat in need. If you would prefer to wait on donating until we learn more, @Carroll.Street.Cat.Club on Instagram to stay updated about Firn's journey!

UPDATES
  • - Dec 24th: Firn was hospitalized last night due to high discomfort and concerns of a potential GI obstruction (he began pooping out plastic garbage from his time on the streets!) Now that he's at the hospital he is getting supportive care, a blood transfusion, a CT scan, and a surgical consultation. The cost of the hospitalization alone is estimated to be $10k-$15k, not including his actual surgery. I've increased his fundraiser goal to $30,000. It's a reflection of what we've raised already and underlines that likely every penny of what was raised will go towards Firn's care (rather than our next rescue cat in need.) Thank you all - we couldn't be doing this for him without your generosity and support
