Help Lulu Get the Second Chance She Deserves

Hi, my name is Jasmine. I’m a mom to a spirited two-year-old, a senior cat, and a goofy dog of my own. I’m also a public health researcher and PhD student — and I’ve always been deeply passionate about helping animals, children, and survivors of violence.

This fall, I’m running my first half marathon, and I want to use this milestone as an opportunity to save the life of a dog who means so much to me: Lulu.

Lulu’s Story

Lulu is an 8-year-old German Shepherd who has already lived a lifetime of hardship. For eight years, she was kept by her family in Los Angeles and used for breeding. When she could no longer have puppies, she was abandoned at the shelter with a note saying she was “great with kids, dogs, and cats.”

The shelter was overwhelming, and after so much trauma, Lulu became anxious and fearful. Despite her sweet description, she began showing reactivity — especially around other dogs and my toddler. Still, when I first picked her up as a foster through Homebound Hounds, she leaned into me, wagged her tail, and soaked up affection as if she’d been waiting her whole life for someone to notice her.

Why Lulu Needs Our Help

Because of her reactivity, Lulu cannot safely stay in my home, and she needs to transition into professional boarding and training until the rescue can find her a foster placement without children. The cost is $1,500 per month, and the small rescue I’m working with doesn’t have the funds to cover this.

Without support, Lulu will have to go back to the shelter in LA — where she would likely end up on the euthanasia list.

Why Lulu Deserves This Chance

Lulu is incredibly smart and eager to please. In just one week, she has already learned sit, stand, down, leave it, paw, gentle, stay, wait, and mastered potty training. With guidance from her trainer, she’s making great strides in managing her leash reactivity.

With the right environment — a calm home without children — and continued support, Lulu will thrive. She’s affectionate, loyal, and deeply loving with her people.

My Goal: $3,000

Our goal is to raise $3,000, which will cover two months of boarding and training — enough time for the rescue to find her a foster placement where she can continue to grow and heal.

All funds and proceeds will go directly to Homebound Hounds for Lulu’s care.

Donate a Mile for Lulu

Here’s how you can join me on race day:

For every $230 donated, I’ll dedicate one mile of my half marathon to you.

I’ll carry a sign with your name and share a message about what I admire about you.

You can also dedicate your mile “in honor of” or “in memory of” someone special (a loved one, a pet, or a cause).

Together, 13 miles add up to Lulu’s lifeline — her safe space and training until she’s ready for a forever home.

Even if you can’t give at the full “mile” level, every dollar helps.

$25 covers one day of boarding.

$100 helps cover a week of training support.

Together We Can Save Her Life

Lulu’s story could have ended when she was abandoned. Instead, we have the chance to write her a new one. With your help, she can move from the shelter system to a safe place where she’ll be loved and supported until her forever home is found.

Please consider donating, sharing this page, and cheering us on. Every step I take in my half marathon will be for Lulu — and for all of you who believe she deserves her second chance.

All donations go directly to Homebound Hounds for Lulu’s care.
