From Setback to Setup: Help Restore Nhik's Photography Gear

Hi, I’m Nhik. A photographer, creative director, griot, and friendly neighborhood plant mom, who’s spent the last 10 years capturing people’s stories and beauty through my lens.

But right now, I’m the one who needs help.

Recently, my world was shaken. My photography equipment — my literal livelihood — was damaged beyond repair. At the same time, I lost my housing, which really almost took me out. On March 31st, after 6 months of job hunting, I started my new position as a teacher at Guidepost Montessori. Less than 4 weeks after my start date, I was pulled into a one-on-one meeting and told the institution was closing due to bankruptcy, and everything I’ve been building felt like it was slipping through my fingers. AGAIN!

I’ve spent years creating opportunities, making art, telling stories, and working hard to provide for myself as a full-time creative. But this series of setbacks knocked me down in ways I never expected. For a long time, I didn’t even have the space to explain it — I was just trying to survive.

Now, I’m rebuilding. Slowly and intentionally. I’ve finally found a new place to live, but without my equipment, I can’t get back to doing what I love or generating the income I need to sustain it. Although I'm back on the hunt, the job market is trash, so searching for work while wasting my skills feels reductive.

That’s why I’m asking for your support.

I’m raising $3,500 to replace my essential gear — camera body (Sony A7-IV) and new lens (Sony G 24-70MM lens), and other tools that allow me to shoot, edit, and work with clients. This will allow me to get back to work, open bookings, and regain my creative independence.

I’ve always prided myself on being resourceful, but right now, I can't do this alone. I don’t want to keep relying on borrowed gear or the generosity of others just to pay my bills. I want to stand on my own again — and keep creating magic the way I know how.
