Hi my name is Blessing Uwa Okundolor and I'm a Nigerian-born writer/director now based in Manchester. I came to the UK pursing dreams of a better life, only to quickly realise how easy it can be for vulnerable immigrants to get exploited and trafficked.
The harsh reality inspired the story at the heart of my film THE GIRL THAT HOPE FORGOT, a gripping drama that follows Jane, a young Nigerian woman who arrives in the UK with the help of her dying friend Ann under the promise of opportunity, only to find herself trapped in the nightmare of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Jane must fight for her life and her freedom against not just the criminal underworld but institutional forces meant to protect her and her friend Ann and also to help Ann.THE GIRL THAT HOPE FORGOT is both Ann's story brought to life on screen and Jane's resilient quest to not let her friend's dream die with her.
It is a powerful testament to the unbreakable bonds of friendship against all odds.
It is a story of resilience, and provides a vital perspective on the often overlooked crisis of sexual violence and abuse on both genders. The cycle of abuse, fear and flawed justice systems impacts everyone in our society.
With your support, I can bring this powerful, multi-layered narrative to Screens and spark crucial conversations.
As a Nigerian writer/director, it is my mission to uplift underrepresented voices and share the human stories behind issues too often simplified or ignored.
I humbly ask you to join me in this creative pursuit to hire crew, locations, complete production, secure distribution, because I know together we can create art that inspires change and compassion.
