Turtle-Safe: From Poachers to Protectors

Help Ocean Sole protect Kenya’s sea turtles — and transform lives in the process.

At Ocean Sole, we transform ocean bound Flip Flops into beautiful sculptures, supporting local communities and artisans. Every day, we collect discarded flip-flops from Kenya’s beaches and waterways and transform them into vibrant, hand-carved art. But we do more than recycle. We create jobs, restore ecosystems, and tell stories that inspire change.

Now, we’re launching our most urgent project yet — and we need your help.

What’s Happening:

On Kenya’s coast, endangered sea turtles are still being poached — their nesting sites raided, their lives at risk. But we’ve seen firsthand how powerful local protection can be.

Through our Turtle Ranger Program, we’ve already trained a team of local fishermen to patrol nesting beaches at night, guide hatchlings to safety, and raise awareness in their communities.

Now, we want to go further.

Our Goal: $20,000+

We’re raising funds to:

Double our Turtle Ranger force

Protect over 12.7 km of coastline from poaching

Build a coastal Education Hub to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards

Why This Matters

Ocean Sole was born from a deep love of marine life — and a need to clean Kenya’s beaches for nesting turtles. What started as a grassroots project in 1999 has grown into a global movement.

Today, we up-cycle over 1 million flip-flops a year, employ nearly 100 Kenyan artisans, and support over 1,000 collectors and community members. But conservation is still at the heart of everything we do.

This project brings it full circle — back to the turtles that started it all.
