On November 5th, 2024, everything changed for my niece, Emma Degen. At the time, she was employed with the Norwalk police department and was undergoing training at the police academy. During training she suddenly became violently ill and was rushed to the emergency room by her fellow recruits. Emma's health deteriorated over the next several months. She was in and out of the hospital and unable to eat without severe pain and constant vomiting. Eventually, a surgeon in Virginia diagnosed her with having Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS); she then had surgery in March 2025.
In July, Emma was airlifted to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Her condition had become critical. She and her mom temporarily relocated to Madison for six months for advanced medical care. Doctors there discovered additional rare compressions, including Nutcracker (NCS), Median Arcuate Ligament (MALS), and May-Thurner (MTS) Syndromes. Emma had MALS surgery in Virginia in October and recently had her kidney removed in Wisconsin, where it was then donated to someone in end-stage renal failure. For nine months, Emma relied on tube feedings and IV nutrition and spent over 165 days in the hospital.
Throughout this, Emma never lost her determination. When she realized a career in law enforcement was no longer possible, she was forced to find a new career. From her hospital rooms, Emma completed the prerequisite classes needed for nursing school. Next month Emma will begin an accelerated nursing program at Mercy College. Her goal is to one day become a travel nurse and go back to the hospitals where she received care.
Many have asked how they can help. The purpose of this fundraiser is to support Emma with her nursing school costs. Emma’s dream of serving others didn’t disappear, it simply changed direction. If you feel moved to donate, please know that your support will not only help Emma rebuild her future, but it will also have an impact on the countless patients who will one day be cared for by a nurse who understands what it means to fight for your life.
Thank you for your prayers, kindness, and support.
