What is NYLF: Medicine & Health Care?

NYLF: Medicine & Health Care is a unique program that offers high school students an immersive experience in the medical field. Here are some of the key highlights:

Inspiring Speakers: I’ll have the chance to learn from leading doctors, nurses, and biomedical engineers from top institutions like Harvard Medical School and UCSF.

Interactive Curriculum: I will practice essential clinical skills, such as suturing, taking vital signs, and conducting neurological exams, while participating in real-life emergency response simulations.

Real-World Exposure: I’ll visit medical schools and cutting-edge simulation centers to learn about the latest technologies and techniques in healthcare.

Outdoor Medicine Simulation: I’ll experience what it’s like to be a first responder during a wilderness emergency simulation.

This program will give me valuable insights and skills, providing a strong foundation for my future in healthcare.

Why This Program Matters to Me

Medicine has been a central part of my life from a very young age. I was born with Hyper-IgE Syndrome (also known as Job’s Syndrome), a rare genetic disorder that affects my immune system. As a result, I’ve spent much of my life in and out of hospitals, particularly at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Two years ago, I underwent a bone marrow transplant, a procedure that saved my life and gave me a second chance. This life-changing experience solidified my desire to pursue a career in pediatric healthcare. I want to give back to the medical community by helping children, just as I was helped by the compassionate doctors, nurses, and specialists who cared for me.

Attending NYLF is the first step in making this dream a reality, but I need your help to get there.

The Role of My Mom

Behind every milestone in my life stands my greatest supporter: my mom. She is a single parent and my strongest advocate, raising me on her own after my father's passing. My mom works tirelessly in education, teaching preschool students—a job she loves but one that comes with financial challenges.

Despite her modest income and the demands of being both a parent and a provider, she has always prioritized my well-being and my dreams. Her unwavering commitment to my health, education, and happiness has made all the difference.

This opportunity is as much for her as it is for me—a chance to show her that all her sacrifices have helped me reach for something extraordinary.

Support from My Grandparents

In addition to my mom, my grandparents have been a vital source of support. They have driven me to countless medical appointments, hospital visits, and treatments, often stepping in to help when my mom needed it most.

Their dedication and love have played an important role in ensuring I receive the care and attention I need. I’m incredibly grateful for their role in my journey, and I hope to make them proud by pursuing a career in healthcare.
