From Patient to Future Physician

Ahkirama'at Haskins has always known she wanted to heal people. As a little girl, she watched Doc McStuffins with wonder, imagining a world where she could fix what was broken and bring comfort to those in pain. But her journey to medicine became deeply personal in a way she never expected.

Born with a cardiac anomaly, Ahkirama'at spent years as a patient, experiencing the vulnerability, the hope, and the trust that comes with placing your life in a doctor's hands. On June 30, 2025, she underwent open heart surgery at UVA Medical Center. That procedure didn't just correct her heart; it crystallized her purpose. She no longer just dreams of being a doctor she knows it's her calling.

Now, at just 15 years old, Ahkirama'at has earned the incredible honor of being nominated to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston, Massachusetts (June 24-26, 2026).

To fully participate in this transformative experience, she needs $3,000 to cover tuition ($2,100), along with room and board and meal expenses during the program. Her family cannot afford this cost alone, and we're reaching out to our community for support to make this opportunity possible.

Who Is Ahkirama'at?

She is far more than a patient with a success story. Ahkirama'at is:

A Scholar: A straight-A student who doesn't just show up to class she studies every single day. She motivates her peers to do the same, understanding that excellence requires dedication.

A Leader: The oldest of four siblings, she's made it her life mission to set the best example possible for those looking up to her. She manages her household responsibilities while excelling in school, proving that age is no barrier to maturity and responsibility.

An Entrepreneur: Since age 8, Ahkirama'at has been a business owner and active member of the Youth Entrepreneur Program with the Metropolitan Business League in Richmond, Virginia. Her work ethic and determination are remarkable for her age.

A Changemaker: As a Jr Board Member for ThisAbility, a non-profit serving children and adults with disabilities, she's already giving back and creating meaningful impact. She understands firsthand how resources and support can transform lives.

An Inspiration: Teachers, mentors, and peers all speak of her focus, her drive, and her ability to inspire those around her. She doesn't just dream she executes.

Why This Matters

The Congress of Future Medical Leaders isn't just another summer program. For Ahkirama'at, it's the bridge between her experience as a patient and her vision of becoming a physician. She wants to see medicine from the doctor's perspective, to understand the science, the decision-making, and the profound responsibility that comes with that white coat.

More than that, she's ready to be in a room full of like-minded young people who share her passion. She's ready to build a network, make friendships, and return to Virginia as an ambassador for this opportunity inspiring more young people, especially those who've faced health challenges, to pursue careers in medicine.

Ahkirama'at knows that representing Virginia at this Congress is both an exciting opportunity and a weight she's prepared to carry. She plans to return with not just knowledge, but a prestigious honor that reflects the Commonwealth's young talent.

Your Support Changes Everything

A $2,100 investment in Ahkirama'at is an investment in a future physician who will approach medicine with empathy, resilience, and real understanding of what her patients experience. It's an investment in a leader who will inspire her generation. It's an investment in someone who already shows us what dedication, excellence, and purpose look like at 15 years old.

Every contribution whether $10, $50, $100, or more brings her closer to Boston and closer to the next chapter of her journey.

Help us send Ahkirama'at to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Help her become the doctor she's meant to be.

Thank you for believing in Ahkirama'at's future. Your support matters more than you know.
