In April 2025, I sustained a spinal cord injury that completely changed my life.
In April 2027, almost exactly two years later, i will step onto the mat in Florida at the Allstar World Championships.
Just 6 months ago i was completely unable to walk. So i never imagined that one day I’d be writing this.
Before my injury, I had recently qualified as a children’s nurse and cheerleading was a huge part of my life. Suddenly, I went from being completely independent to being unable to walk and facing months of hospital treatment and rehabilitation.
I spent eight months in hospital and rehab, learning how to navigate a completely different life. I couldn’t walk for around a year, and learning to walk again took an enormous amount of rehabilitation, determination and patience.
Eventually, I took those steps again. ❤️
But being able to walk doesn’t mean my spinal cord injury has gone away.
I still face challenges every day. I struggle to walk longer distances and stand for long periods, sometimes use my wheelchair, and live with other complications from my injury that aren’t always visible.
My injury has also meant that I haven’t been able to return to the nursing career I’d only just worked so hard to qualify for.
Through all of this, getting back to cheer has given me something to work towards.
I’ve had to adapt. Things aren’t always as easy as they once were, and sometimes I have to accept that I need my wheelchair or additional support. But I’ve been able to return to the sport I love.
And now I’ve been given an opportunity that, while I was lying in a hospital bed unable to walk, I could never have imagined.
I’m part of a team competing at the Allstar World Championships in Florida in April 2027.
From learning to walk again…
to stepping onto the Worlds mat.
Just writing that makes me emotional.
I need to looking to raise in total around £1000 through various methods. Unfortunately cheerleading at this level comes which an incredibly high cost associated. The money raised will help me pay for all the competition related costs aswell as travel and accommodation.
I’ll be doing lots of fundraising over the coming months, but I’ve created this page for anyone who would like to be part of my journey and help me get there.
Every donation, no matter how small, gets me a little closer. And if you’re unable to donate, simply sharing my page would mean just as much.
The last two years have taught me that progress doesn’t always look how you expect it to.
Sometimes it’s learning to stand.
Sometimes it’s taking your first steps again.
And sometimes it’s those steps eventually taking you all the way to a Worlds mat in Florida. ❤️
Thank you for helping me get there.
Brooke x
