Hi, my name is Quinn and I am in 5th grade. Making a GoFund Me is part of a list of requirements to raise money so that I can go to Washington D.C. I'm going in May of 2026 with my homeschool group. This trip is all planned by students. Learning about America and our nation's capital is something that I am really enjoying. I am very thankful that I live in such an amazing country! Every month I have a list of things to do and plan for the trip. The lists have something to do in each subject; math, reading, technology, writing/typing, science, geography, history/social studies, art and entrepreneurship. I have included a few of the lists so that you can see what I am doing. Thank you for your time and thank you for your generosity! God bless you all and God bless America.
(Below was my September checklist that I have completed. I get a new list every month.)
Math: Start researching Washington D.C. and what you would like to do there. Figure out how many hours away we live from Washington D.C. Where would you like to stay while you are there and how many days? Start creating a budget for the trip. Set a goal of how much money you would like to save. Create monthly targets. Create some type of graph so you can document your monthly progress.
Reading: Check out 3-5 books from the library about Washington D.C. Learn everything you can about Washington D.C.— monuments, history, location, what you can visit while there. Learn about the history, the current president, etc.
Technology: Create a 6 slide presentation on Washington D.C. on keynote. This slide should be made up of what you learned about Washington D.C. This can include monuments, places to visit, etc. Present this slideshow to a family member. Once you have created this slideshow then you can create a Go Fund Me page. This page is where you will receive donations.
Writing/Typing: Write a letter asking for donations. This letter must be three paragraphs in length. Each paragraph will be made up of 3-5 sentences. It must include the purpose of the letter (receiving donations), what you plan on doing while there, how the donor can help, etc. Once written you must type your letter.
Science: Build a D.C. Monument – and Test Earthquake Resistance! Research a famous D.C. landmark and then build a model of it using simple materials (toothpicks, marshmallows, LEGOs, etc.). Then, test how well your structure withstands an “earthquake” on a shake table. Research the earthquake that hit Washington D.C. in 2011 and cracked the Washington Monument.
Geography: Locate Washington D.C. on a map. Locate all the surrounding states.
History/Social Studies: Intro to the 3 branches of government. Learn about the three branches of government and why we have them. What is their purpose? Who makes up each branch and tell me what it means to have checks and balances.
Art/LEGO: Choose a popular monument that you can visit in Washington D.C. and build it.
Music: Learn the song The Star Spangled Banner. Learn the history of who wrote it and why. Memorize it and sing it to one person of your choice. Make up your own “Star Spangled Banner” that would represent America and what it stands for. What would you call it and make up at least three different verses.
