Frank “The Tank” Medina is our hometown hero. From Greyhound to Vaquero, he's always given his all to those lucky enough to know him. As one of his high school coaches, I can attest that he’s a young man who beat the odds by working harder than any athlete I’ve ever known. He was named Offensive Lineman of the Year at San Benito High School his senior year. He became a walk-on prospect at a college that thought so little of his abilities that they wouldn’t even issue him a helmet that fit. But in true “Tank” fashion, instead of giving up, he packed up his stuff and moved his efforts to UTRGV. He walked on, outworked everyone he met, and became a starting offensive lineman for UTRGV’s debut football game, earning himself a scholarship along the way. He worked so hard, and with no money, no options, and success being his only option, he made his own dreams come true.
Now, this fairy tale has hit quite the plot twist. Frank was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This is a fast-moving cancer that needs immediate and intense treatment. Frank is in great spirits, and true to his character, he is convinced that this will be just another hill to climb. He has spent more time assuring everyone around him that he will be fine than he has spent worrying about himself. Frank and his family need so much support right now. Leukemia treatment, unlike a lot of cancer treatments, requires a prolonged hospitalization due to the overwhelming risk of infection associated with immune system destruction caused by the treatments. Costs for food, lodging, travel, lost time from work, and all of the other emotional and financial burdens associated with a diagnosis of this kind have all landed on this family like a black cloud.
We are asking for all the prayers and financial support you can give. All donations will go directly to Frank to be used to help with his fight against this ugly disease. Your support will mean the world to Frank and his family as they face this challenge together.
