From Dreaming to Doing: My Cannes Film Market Internship
Donation protected
Hi there! My name is Krishnaa.
Nope, I’m not fundraising for a short film. I know, I know—people usually crowdfund films and short films, not film internships. But this is different. This is a game-changer. A life-altering, career-defining opportunity. And I need your help to make it happen.
One of my favorite quotes I live by is: “Success comes in cans, not cannots.” So when I was offered the internship of a lifetime at the Cannes Film Market—the biggest and most important film business event in the world—I shouted from the rooftops, “I ACCEPT!” And then I realized… I hadn’t exactly planned for such an expensive trip on such short notice. But a little voice in my head reminded me: Success comes in Cannes, and there’s no way I’m missing this.
So, what is the Cannes Film Market?
It’s where the real business of film happens—behind the scenes of the famous festival. While the red carpet steals the headlines, the market is where film rights are bought, sold, and distributed. I’ll be working with an established international sales company, learning what it really means to be a sales agent—negotiating deals, sitting in on meetings with global studios, and understanding how films travel across borders. It’s high-stakes, high-energy, and a rare chance to be right in the thick of it.
The Situation
This is a 9-day internship in Cannes, a stunning (and extremely pricey) resort town in the French Riviera. Because the entire global film industry descends on it during the market, even the most basic accommodation comes with a not-so-basic price tag. The company is covering my food, beverages, and the market entry badge (which, by the way, costs a small fortune!). But I’ll need to cover my flights, accommodation, and visa costs—that’s where you come in!
Why back this Cannes-do attitude?
Because I’m determined. And resilient. And driven.
A little over a year ago, I moved halfway across the world to London to understand the business of film (which is just as important as making great films). I’ve worked 50-60 hour weeks juggling internships, freelance gigs, and a Master’s degree—all to carve my own path in this industry and create my own network in a new country. I’ve hustled in the chaos of Mumbai’s film world, navigated London’s competitive landscape, and now, I’ve landed this springboarding career opportunity.
Opportunities like this aren’t handed out—they’re chased, earned, and sometimes, crowdfunded. If you believe in tenacity and resilience, then you already believe in me. And I promise, this is just the beginning.
What You Can Do
You can chip in – every little bit helps; spread the word, and if you’ve got any Cannes survival tips, travel hacks, or budget-friendly stays, I’d love to hear them – I’m all ears!
As a thank-you, I’m happy to offer a quick one-on-one Zoom where I spill the beans on how film deals are actually made—think sales, markets, behind-the-scenes scoop—perfect if you’re a filmmaker or just curious about the business side of the biz!
Grateful as ever,
Krishnaa
