From darkness to light: Help support our Matt

On Monday night, my beautiful brother Matt was seriously injured in a kitchen fire while cooking dinner for his little girl, Bella. What should have been a quiet night at home turned into a sudden and life changing nightmare.

Matt was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in intensive care. His condition is still serious, but it has stabilised. He had his first surgery on Wednesday, his 32nd birthday. There will be many more in the days and weeks ahead.

He is receiving the very best care. And he is still with us. That is what we are holding onto.

Matt is so many things. He is a dad, a husband, a son, a brother, a nephew, a grandson, a godson, a brother-in-law, a son-in-law and a friend. He is gentle, kind, thoughtful, strong.

He is everything to us.

This page has been created to help Claire, Bella, and all of us get through what lies ahead. Your donation will go towards medical costs, accommodation, travel, time away from work, and the many unexpected things that come with trauma. Most of all, it will give Claire and Bella what they need most right now. Time, space and support.

We are walking this road together. Claire, Mum and Dad, our whole family. And already we are surrounded by so much love. Bella’s preschool has wrapped Claire in kindness. Matt’s football club has shown up in big and small ways. Friends near and far are lifting us with messages, meals and care.

From the first responders, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter team, to the ICU doctors and nurses looking after Matt right now, every single person has brought us hope and reassurance when we’ve needed it most. There are no words big enough to thank them.

Each morning, in our family group chat, we send the same words.

From darkness to light.

The sun got up.

Our precious boy is still with us.

He is in the best place for his care.

And he has us.
