Who We Are:
We’re a volunteer team of UCA Film students and faculty, led by Professors Kyusik Gam and Emily Railsback. With support from Arkansas Cinema Society, we’re producing a short film that advances film education and gives students real-world experience in professional, community-driven filmmaking.
The Story of Neighbors:
This hopeful, family-friendly short film follows two neighbors—an elderly woman and a young single mother—who are politically divided, each belonging to the fictitious Purple and Orange parties. When a curious dog brings them together at a local park, they discover that shared values, a love of gardening, and small acts of kindness can bridge even the deepest divides.
Why This Matters:
Lately, it feels like much of what we see on our screens is designed to scare, divide, or discourage us. Political tension has seeped into our closest relationships, and stories of families and friends being pulled apart by differing beliefs are becoming all too common.
That’s why we believe it’s more important than ever to create media that inspires hope, unity, and understanding. Our short film is a story about bridging divides—about how simple, human connections can overcome even the deepest disagreements.
The 20 film students working on this project are aspiring filmmakers, many preparing for their final capstone course—the most demanding creative challenge of their college careers. This film will help them sharpen their skills in ways that go beyond the classroom, giving them hands-on experience in professional, collaborative filmmaking.
All materials from this short film will be used to serve our UCA Film Department and students at large, giving access to the footage for editing classes, contracts, templates, budgeting & fundraising strategies, and more!
With support from the Arkansas Cinema Society and our local community, this project also aims to strengthen the film culture in Arkansas—connecting students, mentors, and audiences through meaningful storytelling.
