From Celebration to Crisis

This past Friday was supposed to be a joyful day. I was out of town with Joshua, who was representing our county in the Special Olympics state competition at Disney. We should have been celebrating his accomplishments making memories and soaking in a proud moment.

Instead, I watched a stranger break into our home, live on our cat camera.

I called 911 immediately, but being hours away, all I could do was watch and wait. It was terrifying and surreal. The man was clearly in the middle of a mental health crisis. And while I have genuine empathy for that, it doesn’t change the fear or the fact that our sense of safety was deeply shaken.

Our home has always been a safe place especially for our son. Reclaiming that peace will take time, healing, and resources.

We’re pretty private people and don’t usually ask for help. But this situation has left us navigating some unexpected challenges we weren’t prepared for emotionally and financially. From securing our home again to seeking therapy to process everything, it’s more than we can manage on our own right now.
