My name is Janice Smith and I'm from Walkersville, Maryland. My dear sister-in-law Jessica and her family lost their home and possessions in the Eaton Fire. I am heartbroken by their loss.

On January 7th, the devastating "Eaton" fire ignited and swept through Altadena, California, forcing my sister-in-law, Jessica Coker-Lentz, Jeff Lentz, Nyx Coker-Lentz, Ace Coker-Lentz, Jonathan Coker-Lentz, their two dogs, and two cats to evacuate at 3 AM. Initially, they found shelter in a hotel in nearby Pasadena, but on January 8th, when they returned to check on their home, they discovered it completely engulfed in flames. On January 9th, they were evacuated again, this time from Pasadena to another hotel further south in Norwalk, as the fire threatened surrounding areas.

Jessica and her family are facing the greatest challenge of their lives. They have lost their home and countless irreplaceable memories from their life in Altadena. As of January 10th, the Eaton fire has burned 13,956 acres and is only 3% contained. With wind-driven flames, low humidity, and dry conditions, the fire is continuing to spread rapidly, causing catastrophic damage. Over 5,000 structures have been destroyed, and thousands of families, like Jessica's, have been displaced.

Jessica and her family only took a few items when evacuating, thinking it was a temporary measure. Now their house and possessions are gone, so they have to start from scratch.
