In March 2026, I will be running my first marathon.
I'm not doing it to chase a time or prove anything. I'm doing it for mental wellness, clarity and continued dedication to remain alcohol-free. My sobriety began in 2021 and I have been alcohol free ever since.
In 2021, I hit rock bottom. My alcohol abuse finally caught up to me—hard. I spent six weeks in a residential treatment facility, beginning with a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold. I was drinking so heavily that when I tried to stop, my body went haywire. I began suffering severe withdrawal symptoms and required around the clock medical care & supervision to get out of the woods.
When the smoke cleared, I looked into a broken mirror and saw pieces of what I had become. I had to change; my life depended on it.
Running has become the steady anchor in my life - especially as a black man in my 40's navigating stress, responsibility, and the quiet weight that often goes unspoken. What began as a tradeoff for drinking, slowly became the building blocks for something bigger. Running gave me structure, discipline, and space to think clearly. It helped me stay grounded and committed to a sober life.
This marathon represents consistency over chaos. One step at a time. One mile at a time.
I am asking for support to help cover the real costs of preparing for and running the race. Registration, travel, gear, nutrition, and recovery - but more importantly, to stand behind a message that, for black men, mental health matters! And that choosing sobriety is a daily and intentional decision.
Whether you contribute financially, share this, or simply send encouragement, your support means more than you know. This isn't just a finish line - it's a commitment to sobriety. Running gave me my life back.
Thank you for being part of the journey
With love & gratitude,
-George
