Friends of Mike Sonnenschein Medical Relief Drive

***THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING THIS WONDERFUL CAUSE***

Friends, family, fellow rangers and soldiers,

I come to you all to ask for support for my brother-in-law Mike Sonnenschein who sustained a gunshot wound this week in Haiti (on the night of the 27th).  Mike and his wife Hope were attacked by gunmen on their way home after just returning from a trip home in the states. As you can imagine, this has been an extremely traumatic event for Mike and the family. Many of you may know Mike from serving with him, but if you have lost touch, they have been in Haiti since 2016 serving in several mission roles. Hope and Mike have worked at Danita's Children Orphanage, Deep River Mission, and are currently with Medical Ambassadors Haiti helping with a range of things including a malnutrition program for Haitian children. This work has been demanding and taxing on them, but also extremely rewarding. If you know Mike, he has a heart of gold and is committed to serving others always before himself whether in uniform or as a civilian.

If you do not know Mike personally, he is an amazing individual, husband, father, brother, and a decorated Airborne Ranger who served honorably and with distinction in multiple combat operations during his career (Operation Just Cause in Panama, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror in Afghanistan). Mike started his career in A co 3/75 where he won the Best Ranger Competition in 1989 as an E5, and went on to serve as a Ranger Instructor, Victor Branch Chief, and every position from Ranger Private to First Sergeant prior to retiring. That is a very generalized summary of a great military history, and it doesn't do him justice, but I also don't want to get too detailed either (he will hate reading this, as he is the humblest Ranger I know). Mike has gone the distance for America, and has always put others before himself, and has always sacrificed for others. He is one of the most selfless individuals I know. The thing most important to him other than his family was sharing God's love to the people of Haiti.

The current situation is that Mike has been Medevac’d to Tulane and is in stable condition. When he was shot, he immediately lost feeling in his lower extremities, but we have confirmed some feeling in his feet has returned off and on and his spine was not severed by the fragment.

Due to the nature of the current political climate and State Department country threat levels in Haiti, medical costs may not be covered, and will put an extreme burden on him and Hope.  I cannot tell you how devastating this could be for them. They will need all the help we can muster up to get through this, and I ask for any help you are able to send his way by donating to this Go Fund Me drive.

Please send prayers and positive thoughts his way as we help them navigate this extremely stressful time, we appreciate you all. If you have any questions, please email me at [email redacted] or you can message me on Instagram at john.newton375, I do not have a Facebook, so please pass this on or post to any social media that may help.

With appreciation and warmest regards to you all,

John "Newt" & Shannon Newton
