Dear global community of Fitz fans:
Our dear Fitz, canine companion of Sarah Kobetis, is suffering from a complicated and often terminal autoimmune disorder called IMHA. We are trying to raise up to $4,000 to cover part of the exorbitant costs Sarah faces as she and Andy do everything they can to nurse Fitzdog back to health. All of the proceeds of this Friends-of-Fitz fundraiser will go directly to Sarah Kobetis to reimburse some of the medical costs she's incurred. Essentially, IMHA is a form of autoimmune anemia, where the immune system attacks the body's red blood cells. A healthy dog has a packed blood cell volume (PCV) of 40-55%, Fitz's has been hovering between 20-30% since Wednesday 11/2. The breakdown of red blood cells puts a strain on the liver, causing jaundice in addition to extreme weakness and lethargy. The survival rate for dogs with IMHA is about 50%--if a dog survives the first two weeks of the illness, the odds increase to 75%. Learn more about IMHA .
In the first week since he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday 11/2, Sarah and Andy spent around $4,000 on x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests, and IV medication/hydration. They took him home from the hospital on Saturday, and are continuing to treat him with oral medications that include steroids, immunosupressants, antibiotics, anti-nausea meds, and a blood thinner to try and prevent blood clots. Blood clots are the leading cause of death in IMHA dogs.
If Fitz survives, he will have to continue his oral steroid therapy for at least six months.
