Friendships crumble as a dinner with old friends devolves into sacrifice.
The Story
For so many of us, our significant relationships are bound by choice, vulnerability, confidence, and time; even the platonic ones are, in a way, romantic. What’s more romantic than finding a person who speaks your same, unspoken language? Though I’ve had good fortune in finding and cultivating deep, meaningful friendships, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to reflect on them in new ways. How have they evolved? What benefits do they bring? Have I just maintained them out of obligation or habit? Time can calcify resentment, the effort to repair what is damaged can become too exhaustive, and sometimes, quite simply, growing up can mean growing apart.
In co-writing and directing this film, I want to interrogate the deterioration of those sacred bonds. How can friends who were once consumed by each other decompose into savage barbs of loathing critique?
In Friends, Giving, we seed this looming threat over the course(s) of a Friendsgiving meal. In juxtaposing a joyful occasion with a vicious battle of virtue, I’ll yank at the exposed threads of a very fragile group of “close” friends. Over the course of one evening, they’ll all collectively be forced to shed one friend that no longer serves them. In making that choice, the veil of pretense will disintegrate: are any of them really still friends at all, or are they all just pretending?
The Impact
You'll be supporting up-and-coming filmmakers, the craft of filmmaking and a very universal theme that most of us confront at every stage of our lives. The FRIENDS, GIVING team is committed to making a film that will incite radical honesty and delicious emotional grandeur.
You will also help the careers of every single cast and crew member involved. The work is deeply significant and will continue to propel all of us forward.
