Omoyele Sowore is a prominent journalist, human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner. He is the founder of Sahara Reporters, an online news agency that focuses on corruption, human rights abuses and other political misconduct in Nigeria. Challenging government corruption and speaking truth to power has been the constant thread throughout Mr. Sowore’s career, from the leading of student protests in the 1990s to his recent bid for the Presidential office in Nigeria.
In an attempt to silence his hard-hitting voice, the Federal Government, through its Directorate of State Security Services (DSS), abducted Mr. Sowore on August 3rd, 2019. Despite the blatant lack of evidence to support all laughable charges brought against him, Mr. Sowore has been kept in detention for 2 months and counting.
This is despite a court order to release him on bail. In addition to ignoring a binding order by a court of law, the government is now demanding a king's ransom for him – 100 million Naira -through another kangaroo court judgment. This is in addition to other equally-specious conditions.
Mr. Olawale Adebayo Bakara (Mandate) and Mr. Agba Jalingo are also stalwarts of the Take-It-Back movement who dared to speak truth to power. For their patriotism, they have been rewarded with harassment, torture, lawsuits, and incarceration.
We intend to unite in cash and in-kind behind Omoyele Sowore, Agba Jalingo and Mandate, by raising funds to support their legal defense.
Thank you for your passion and patriotism.
Dr. Joshua Adeoye (Director General, Take-It-Back Movement)
