Francisco Gallardo is a 21 year-old latino man who has had to endure more challenges than most people do in a lifetime.
He needs an attorney to represent him in court March 19th. He's currently in custody facing serious charges that could potentially ruin his future, charges that are by no means representative of his actions.
His case is too serious to be left in the hands of a public defender who is paid by the county regardless of the effort they put in.
Francis is a FTM transgender man being held in a female detention center. The way inmates are treated there and the conditions in which they live are inhumane, being trans only adds to the abuse and humiliation of being incarcerated.
Currently, the only help he's received is a public defender, this leaves him at the mercy of a system that is structurally unjust.
His family has turned their back on him, leaving him without a home and with no support system of any kind.
Francis came to the US from Honduras at a young age seeking a better life. He's had to experience homelessness, poverty, abuse, discrimination and violence throughout his formative years. Despite of his upbringing, he continues to have a positive outlook and dreams about making a positive impact in the lives of others.
Francis is a generous, intelligent, passionate human being who cares a lot about other people and who does anything he can to help, even though he doesn't have much.
Prior to his arrest, he was volunteering at the Los Angeles LGBT center and had plans to create a space for homeless street performers to practice. Having experienced homelessness himself, he knows how important it is to find resources to survive and a place to belong. He would often ask to take leftover sandwiches from lunch at school to feed people living on the streets.
His positivity and determination to get an education and break the cycle he's been living in is inspiring and it is our goal to help him have these opportunities.
This is why we need as much help as we can get to be able to get proper legal representation for Francis.
