Freedom McGee, like many, has had a difficult year.
In early March, Freedom was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She has done all she can do to heal her body and her spirit with a focus on mental health, focus, clarity, and creativity. She has remained remarkably optimistic since her diagnosis.
And that is no surprise. As a dancer, mother, and essential worker she is no stranger to sweat and struggle. Freedom knows how to work. But the cancer, along with the aggressive, life-zapping treatments she endured, has left her “bone-tired” and suffering from lingering, debilitating fatigue. She often wakes up after a full night’s sleep utterly exhausted and unable to do anything except be still, and let her body heal.
Chemotherapy increases the risk of mortality and serious complications from most illnesses, including the flu, the common cold, and COVID-19. Under the strict advisory of doctors (and anybody with half a brain), Freedom has been barred from working during the pandemic.
The good news: Freedom in remission! She stands tall -- hilarious and bright-spirited, and ready to climb any hill there is to climb. Cancer-free, thank be! But her strong, beautiful life force is no match for heartless capitalism, which bring us to the bad news:
Her experience in our for-profit medical system has been financially devastating.
She needs your help.
What happened to her could happen to any of us. A routine checkup set the scene for a grim diagnosis and an epic battle. A born optimist, her decision to choose debt over death was obvious. She channeled her passion for life into surviving the hell of chemo, and in typical Freedom style, she won the battle. But, despite what we all may assume, she’s not invincible.
Our friend can’t do everything on her own. Like our mothers and our mother’s mothers, we know that sheer will is simply not enough. We know that our strongest friends and even our own mortal mothers are only human.
Our strength is not proven alone -- we are most durable when we stand together. In this fundraiser, we are motivated not by the fear of her mortality, but by the sheer joy of her life and how the bright star that is Freedom illuminates our whole community.
