My name is Kyan - like Ryan with a K. I am 11 years old and I'm in the 5th grade. I am proud to have been selected as 1 of 50 International students for the new Freedom Writer's Project.
You may remember the Freedom Writers movement from the 1990s that later became a movie in 2007 staring Hillary Swank or from the book published in 1999. During the summer of 2020, the Freedom Writers Foundation opened up its program to mentor youth via Zoom. The sessions were very emotional but very powerful and highly productive.
At age 11, I am the youngest author of the group. We range from 11 years old to college students in their 20’s. We came together from all over the world and became good friends in our virtual workshops. We met on Zoom through the pandemic lock down. We shared and edited our stories with the original Freedom Writer Students and Freedom Writer teachers. Our end product was a new book called "Dear Freedom Writers." The book is a collection of stories of hardship, immigration, police brutality, survival, and hope.
There will be a symposium for all the young authors in Long Beach, CA, from Saturday, 3/26/22, to Tuesday, 3/29/22. The final night will be a book signing event at the Maya Hotel in Long Beach, CA.
Although I earned a partial scholarship from my school district to attend the symposium, I still need to raise $1,000 to get there.
