After caring for their son Vaughn Eloyan around the clock for more than ten years, Anna and her family are asking for help to give him something they can no longer provide on their own—an accessible wheelchair van and an all-terrain wheelchair, so he can safely experience life beyond four walls.
Vaughn has always refused to let obstacles define him. Born with a mild form of cerebral palsy, he walked and spoke differently than most people, but never allowed his disability to stand in the way of his dreams. Through determination and hard work, Vaughn earned a bachelor's degree in History and completed two years of law school. He lived independently, had many friends, and married the person he loved. Then, just one month after his wedding, everything changed. Just weeks after receiving a flu vaccine, Vaughn developed symptoms of what was later diagnosed as transverse myelitis, a rare neurological disorder that left him completely paralyzed—a quadriplegic. Believing there might be a connection, Anna and her family filed a petition with the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. After years of waiting, their claim was ultimately denied. Today, at 44 years old, Vaughn cannot move a single finger. Yet despite everything, he continues to communicate and stay connected to the world by typing with his nose on his iPad.
Then, in an instant, everything changed. When Vaughn became paralyzed, nothing else mattered. To be by his side, Anna and her family left their careers, exhausted their savings, spent their retirement, and eventually lost their home. They moved across the country so they could continue caring for him themselves, because no one could love or fight for him the way his parents do. Today, they are asking for your help to give Vaughn something most of us take for granted: the freedom to leave home safely and experience life beyond four walls. An accessible wheelchair van would allow them to transport him safely to medical appointments, therapy, family gatherings, and community activities without the constant physical strain and logistical challenges they face today. An all-terrain wheelchair would give Vaughn something he has not experienced in years—the freedom to enjoy parks, nature trails, beaches, gardens, community events, and time outdoors with dignity and independence.
Despite everything he has lost, Vaughn has never lost his love of learning. He enjoys history, loves reading, and has a subtle sense of humor that continues to brighten his family's days. Seeing him smile gives Anna and her family strength and reminds them why they keep fighting, even on the hardest days. As parents, Anna and her family also carry a fear that never leaves them. They are doing everything they can to stay healthy and strong because they don't know what will happen to Vaughn when they are no longer here. That uncertainty weighs heavily on their hearts every single day.
Your support will help fund these essential resources, along with accessibility expenses like vehicle modifications, adaptive equipment, taxes, and registration. Every donation, no matter the amount, brings them one step closer to giving Vaughn the freedom to travel, spend time outdoors, and enjoy experiences most take for granted. If more than the goal is raised, additional funds will be used exclusively for Vaughn's ongoing mobility, accessibility, medical, and caregiving needs. Anna and her family are deeply grateful for your kindness and generosity—together, we can help Vaughn break free from the limitations of his past and embrace a future filled with possibility.
Thirty-eight years ago, Anna and her husband came to the United States from the former Soviet Union with little more than hope for a better future. Life in the Soviet Union had not been easy; because Anna's husband's father was born in the United States, their family was viewed with suspicion. Opportunities in science and technology were closed to them, as they were considered potential security risks. They dreamed of a country where hard work—not politics or circumstances beyond their control—would determine their future. America gave them that chance. Through determination and perseverance, they built successful careers, bought a home, and raised three children, all of whom earned college degrees and are building successful careers of their own. Anna and her husband believed that after years of sacrifice, they had built a secure future for their family.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read our story. Your kindness, compassion, and generosity give our family hope during one of the most difficult chapters of our lives. Thank you for helping us give Vaughn the freedom to experience life beyond four walls.
