For over 3 years, Ramel Freeman has been incarcerated on Rikers Island in pre-trial detention. Ramel has medical conditions that put him at a high risk for COVID-19 complications and severe illness, but his emergency release requests were denied several times. He contracted COVID-19 last summer due to poor facility conditions and mismanagement of those who tested positive, who were mixed in with the population who had not tested positive. He has experienced multiple incidents of brutality at the hands of corrections officers that resulted in injuries to his nose and arm that require surgery. We, his family and friends, fear for his health and safety every day, but we do not have the $10,000 needed to post his bail so he can be safe at this time when he has not been convicted of a crime. In recent conversations Ramel has expressed feelings of hopelessness and so we are asking for help from those who stand for true justice for all.
