Freedom for Derwin

Tax deductible
We are raising money to free our friend, Derwin Murillo, a Honduran refugee who fled gang violence in his country.  Currently Derwin is a detainee at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Adelanto, California.  He has been there since March of this year, 2018.

Derwin, age 24, served in the Honduran military as a police officer because he wanted to help his country fight the narco gangs that terrorized his community.  In fact, his father was shot and ended up paralyzed after an encounter with gang members.  Derwin was threatened almost immediately after joining the service, threats that continued throughout his two years in the military.  Of course, that service was also one of the factors that made him a target of their threats.  The military turned out to be not the path Derwin hoped it would be.  Very early on, he witnessed many injustices done by the military.  After his enlistment ended he got a job in a seatbelt factory, but he continued to be threatened by the two gangs that controlled his town, the 18th Street Gang and Los Treceños.  The threats were very real.   At least five of his fellow military police officers were kidnapped, tortured and killed by the gangs.  Last December the narcos made another visit to Derwin's house and would have killed him then, but his family was able to intervene.  Derwin was more scared than ever before because he realized the gangs would never leave him alone.  So he fled, first to Mexico, but gangs there tried to force him to carry drugs into the U.S.  So he continued to make his way to our southern border.  There he was arrested by Border Patrol.

We are committed to raising the money to free this young man.  He is a quiet, serious person, a person of great faith.  His dream is to become a firefighter.  Please give what you can so we can bond him out of Adelanto.  If anyone deserves a chance at asylum it is Derwin. His commitment to doing good for his country and the people of the  United States, by trying to stop the flow of drugs, is what put his life at risk.

If you have any questions about Derwin, the asylum process, and what happens after a detainee is freed, we are happy to answer them as best we can.  And, by the way, your donation is tax-deductible since it goes to the Claremont United Church of Christ.  The church is simply acting as the receiving agent for the funds.  When we raise the $30,000 for Derwin's bond, $5000 of which the church is already holding, the church will release the funds.  The church's tax id number is on the donation screen.  Just click on the church's name and you'll find the number.

Please give!  And thank you for your compassion and generosity.  Derwin is a good man.  He deserves your support.
