In the middle of the night, there is a knock at the door.
Homes are raided. Computers, cameras, notebooks are confiscated.
Journalists are taken away – not because of violence, not because of a crime, but because they reported.
At the beginning of February, 96 people were detained in nationwide raids in Turkey. Among them: journalists from the independent news agency ETHA. Their “crime”? Reporting on social struggles, on women’s movements, on strikes, on state abuses. Giving a voice to those who would otherwise not be heard.
And that is exactly what is meant to be prevented.
These arrests are not isolated incidents. They are part of an escalating repression against critical media. Those who investigate risk prosecution. Those who publish risk imprisonment. Those who speak the truth are criminalized.
ETHA stands for courageous, uncompromising journalism. For reporting that is not filtered, not adapted, not silenced. When such voices fall silent, we lose more than just news – we lose perspectives, we lose truth, we lose a piece of freedom.
Repression aims to create fear. It seeks to isolate. It seeks to discourage. Our answer is solidarity.
Behind every arrested journalist is a person with hope, with conviction, with family. Behind every charge are enormous legal costs. Behind every confiscated camera stands the question of whether independent reporting will still be possible.
With your donation, you help to:
* secure legal defense,
* support affected journalists and their families,
* keep independent journalism alive despite state repression.
Freedom does not die all at once. It disappears step by step when we remain silent. But it lives on when we act.
Let us show together:
Journalism is not a crime.
Solidarity knows no borders.
