Free Omari of Bed Sores with the Freedom Bed
Donation protected
My son Omari is 19 years old. He was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy also known as DMD when he was a toddler. For the past 11 years, Omari has been non-ambulatory (not able to walk). DMD is a disease/condition that deteriorates all of the muscles in your body (heart, lungs, etc). This disease is progressive and is making life very challenging for my son. However, we are not without joy or hope!
I have started this Go Fund Me page to try and raise funds to get Omari, the Freedom Bed. After being rejected by my health insurance company on several occasions, I am not giving up. I am trying to purchase the bed independently with personal donations. I have looked into renting the bed which my husband and I can't afford the payment of $2,600 each month.
I am tired but I can't give up because I know this bed will change Omari's life. The Freedom Bed will help my baby become more independent and more comfortable. He will no longer have to rely on his caregivers to physically reposition him every 15-30 minutes but will be able to use the voice control to control his own comfort.
Over the last two years, Omari has had three surgeries. These surgeries have led Omari to be gradually less mobile and very uncomfortable in bed. Omari has a lot of discomfort in a regular bed. We have to prop his bed with pillows to try to make him comfortable. He has a recliner bed, but he is still uncomfortable. Some nights he doesn't sleep because of his discomfort. The freedom bed, would make his bed experience so much better. The bed has so many features to help with comfort. To name a few:
Voice control - Omari can control the bed with his voice for repositioning.
Lateral and angle rotation.
Manual or automatic operation .
The many features of the Freedom Bed provide a number of key benefits to immobilized bed-users such as:
The automated turning processallows for more frequent turning to address the multi-system pathophysiological events associated with immobility. Also referred to as kinetic therapy, this turning not only provides pressure relief to prevent or treat bedsores but it can also produce, for example, a dramatic reduction in the incidence of respiratory problems and urinary tract and bladder infections
Significantly better quality of sleep since the bed-user does not have to be manually turned during the night and is not woken up by the bed turning. This creates better mental clarity, better health and an improved lifestyle, free from dependence on caregivers during the night
The opportunity to live in a home setting instead of an institution
Pain reduction
The bed can still rotate when the torso is in a raised position up to 30°. This can be added to the Reverse Trendelenburg position, if suitable, for a maximum included angle of approximately 42°. A pillow adds more elevation again. Torso elevation is of significant benefit to people who are tube fed and/or respirator dependent.
Prevention or reduction of gastro-esophageal reflux
Better respiratory health and clearance of upper respiratory and oral secretions
Reduction in spasticity and abnormal tone.
Discomfort
Improved bowel regularity
No dehydration and subsequent electrolyte imbalance since the bed creates no heat.
Thank you in advance for your donation.
