Free Medor to Return to His Handler

Hello! My name is Deidra and at the suggestion of petition signers, I’m raising funds to cover the cost of buying an 8 year old canine for his handler after the city refused to let him retire when his handler of 7 years left the city. Schertz Police Chief states it would take $25,000 to replace Medor, otherwise he will work him until he can work no more. That’s no life for a K-9 officer to live out the last few years of his life, especially after he’s worked so hard for our community. Stand with us and help bring Medor home to the only family he’s known. If for some reason, this campaign does not end up going the way we hope, all funds raised will be returned or, upon request, donated to a wildlife rescue organization.

Here’s the story that got us here. The following is in the words of his former handler/partner and forever friend, Jason Hanley:
“I hope with this media coverage and people still signing the petition we get the end result to have Medor come home and be retired. I know a lot of people are asking how much will be to purchase a new dog to replace him? Is it really $25,000? The answer is its anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 dollars and that usually also includes the training for the dog and new handler. Where the $25,000 number comes from I don't know. As for how much did it cost to purchase Medor back in 2016, it was $8,500. As to why Medor couldn't leave with me when I resigned from the agency in May, that is because back in August of 2022, I asked about having Medor if I left. I was told that I could have him because of his age. Fast forward to January of this year and after a meeting, I decided that my tenure at the department was going to come to an end. The reasons why are to be discussed in a different venue. In March when it was found out I had applied to a new agency, the chief pulled me into his office and told me I must have misunderstood or misinterpreted about Medor leaving if I left the department and that he would remain at the agency. I offered to get a loan and purchase Medor to which the chief immediately refused the notion. In the beginning of May, I turned in my two week notice along with a letter to adopt Medor with objective reasons to retire Medor. Chief and another administrator a few days later pulled me into their office and told me I could not adopt Medor along with some other comments. Medor is at retirement age and does have some issues in that a year and a half ago he had hip issues to where he had a hard time getting in and out of the squad car and had to be on pain medication. A MRI showed that he had pinched or hurt the last few vertebrae in his spin near his hips. While he recovered from it, it's still something to watch for. Medor also has a chronic ear issues that cause him pain and even affects his work performance. I say all of this to show that the amount of money and time spent on Medor could be spent on a new dog for the new handler to properly bond and be apart of the canine program for the long term rather than the short term. I also just want Medor to enjoy the last few years of his life being the goofball that he is and enjoy the good life that he deserves. Thank you all for the support and I appreciate it more than you will ever know. I appreciate anyone and everyone who signs the petition and forwards this media story and petition to gain the traction and support for this cause. Thank you.”
Sincerely
Jason
