Free Booby Food - Protect Breastmilk, Breastfeeding Rights

Hi, my name is Janna. I am a mother to two small boys and entrepreneur. While dealing with my own breastfeeding struggles for my first born, who was SGA and started on formula, I created a company that freeze-dries mother's own breastmilk so that it's protected, and her baby can use it for much longer and in many more ways (like adding to food) than traditional bottle feeding.

Over the last 6 years, I've built this service with an unwavering faith and purpose to protect breastmilk and breastfeeding rights for mothers. Booby Food was the first to be regulated and since there was no category for human breastmilk, mother's breastmilk was classified as dairy. When you're the first to do something, you may not fit the boxes available at the time but have to make do what what's given.

For six years, we have proudly served families like yours, helping moms with over-supply, under-supply, high lipase, working moms, travelling moms, surrogates and IPs. As you know, Booby Food was the first to be regulated in Canada and it took many years working with our regulator to be issued a license because there was no category for human breastmilk. Instead, your breastmilk was classified as a dairy commodity. When you're the first to do something, often you don't quite fit the boxes that are available.

Recently we received a temporary suspension of our license as our regulator has shared that breastmilk should be transported and handled the same way commercial dairy milks and they are uncertain about the safety of processing surrogate breastmilk as they’re not the biological mother of the child.

As us breastmilk feeding mothers know, breastmilk is vastly different from ruminant dairy milks - from composition to expression, storage and handling. Although we may feel like cows at times, we are not.

Surrogacy clients undergo rigorous health screenings by their agencies to even be considered as a birth mother.

We are committed to a science-based approach in resolving this matter. Our protocols are supported by evidence-based research on human milk handling and preservation, and we have worked with experts to ensure our methods are both safe and effective as we have had zero safety complaints or health incidences.

How the funds will be used?

Over $80,000 in legal fees and on going business expenses has already amassed this early on. This has been funded by our family despite the inability to accept orders and have income coming in for our owner/operator run small business. We have a road ahead that will cause expenses to rise exponentially and while we will do everything we can to protect this service, your support will help us succeed faster to help more babies and mothers.
