Help Us Empower Creativity: Support the Crafty Seniors!
Hi, I'm Jami King, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been volunteering with low-income seniors at a 55+ apartment complex in Santa Clarita, California. Through my initiative, “Crafty Seniors", I lead a vibrant group of men and women who explore their creativity through arts and crafts.
Our Goal: $1,000
While I initially aimed for $500, I've realized that expanding our program to include more participants and replacing old donated tools and supplies requires a total of $1,000. This will ensure we have essential ergonomic tools and supplies for our growing group, which currently meets every Tuesday. This class is 100% free for the seniors, and we intend on keeping it that way with your help.
What We Need
Your donations will help us purchase vital art supplies, for example:
- 10-15 ergonomic scissors ($20 each)
- Acrylic paint ($10/tube)
- Brightly colored double stick tape for vision issues ($15)
- 10-15 brayers for applying paint smoothly ($10-$15 each)
- 10-15 Gelli plates for fun and creative printing ($20 each)
- Teabag paper (100 sheets for $25)
- Various consumables like paper, colored pencils, glue, tape, markers, various types of inks and paints,, stickers, embellishments, etc.
These tools are crucial for enhancing the crafting experience and helping our seniors express their creativity while helping to address mobility and dexterity issues.
Why It Matters
Arts and crafts have a profound impact on our participants. Take Martha, for example. During 2020, Martha's life changed in an instant when she battled COVID, suffered a heart attack, and experienced a stroke all at the same time! She couldn't even hold a paintbrush, but today she creates some of the most spectacular watercolors and painted rocks. Through our art program, Martha has remarkably redeveloped her motor skills and found renewed joy in creativity.
I’ve collaborated with local artists, crafters, and even professional artists from universities who voluntarily donate their time and creativity. Additionally, I've participated in craft swaps and collected crafting donations across Southern California, showcasing the community's support for our mission.
