Freda the Cancer Warrior

Freda is one of the most beautiful souls to grace the Earth and is an amazingly strong woman. She is only 33 years old, and in January 2023 she discovered a lump in her right breast. She knew something was wrong but had to wait until March to see her primary care doctor.

She had an ultrasound first followed by a mammogram. The mammogram showed that more than one biopsy was needed. The wait for the biopsies was extreme. After speaking with a friend who had experience with her own breast biopsy, she was able to get Freda help at The Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Freda’s biopsies were scheduled within a week and results followed quickly. The center immediately scheduled an oncologist’s appointment and an appointment with a surgeon.

Freda’s first diagnosis was Invasive Carcinoma Grade 3. Her cancer had also extended to lymph nodes in her armpit, often making it difficult to use her right arm.
Freda started chemo on July 5th while completing her final classes for her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Social Science, with a double major in Political Science and International Studies. She continued to work full-time as a manager at a tech distribution company while completing her degree.

Unfortunately, on July 19th, a PET scan revealed troubling news and an unexpected cancer diagnosis. The results of a PET scan showed that there is a cancerous spot on the spine and more lymph node involvement in the clavicle area. Freda’s diagnosis is now Stage IV, Olygometastatic Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. The treatment plan she is currently undergoing is aggressive chemo, followed by surgery, and now radiation will be necessary.

Freda’s battle will be both physically and emotionally draining. The financial challenge will be another hurdle. Large insurance deductibles, unexpected medical expenses, and extended treatment will be a substantial financial burden. She hopes to continue working full-time throughout treatment, but that might not be possible.

Freda is the friend you call when you are having a difficult day and you need someone who understands. She has a unique way of lifting spirits and making your day a little brighter. She has been a bridesmaid, maid of honor and best friend to all of us. Our lives have changed for the better with Freda here.

Freda is determined to proudly walk across the stage at her August graduation with a giant smile on her face and her diploma in hand.

Please help this warrior fight this battle and win it! If you can find it in your heart to help, your donation will be so appreciated.
