This is Fred Walker. A year ago Fred was enjoying life...playing Golf, Bowling and hanging out with friends. Then, unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. One day he woke up feeling very lethargic thinking he's just tired, but it was like that the next day and then the next day...He decided to go see his doctor because he was due for a check-up anyway. He had the normal procedure, ie. blood work. The next day, he received a call from his doctor telling him that needs to go to an emergency room because his blood platelet counts were so low that he needed a blood transfusion. As time went by, more tests were performed and he was eventually diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). This is a condition that can occur when the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow become abnormal.
Treatment for this disease involves Chemotherapy and in most cases a bone marrow transplant. In Fred's case he will need a bone marrow transplant. Fred has gone through low-dose Chemotherapy and because his immune system is so low he ended up catching pneumonia and had to go to the hospital to recover. They ended up finding a couple of bone marrow matches for him. In April, he will be receiving high dose Chemotherapy and shortly after that he will then receive his bone marrow transplant. After the bone marrow transplant Fred will be like a new born baby with virtually no immune system so he will be put in an isolated room. He will be in the hospital after this procedure for more than a month so that he can build up his immune system. It can take up to a year after the transplant before he is able to go back to work and start enjoying his life again.
Because of his condition he is unable to work and bills are coming in. The cost of his treatment is astronomical. He will be inundated with hospital bills, insurance costs and not to mention his own bills for everyday living.
