Fred Altstadt has been fighting for his life—again.
In July 2024, Fred was diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer, triggered by the very medications he needs to prevent rejection of his donated kidney. These medications suppress his immune system, making him more vulnerable—and the skin cancers keep coming.
So far this year, Fred has undergone two major facial surgeries, where large parts of his nose and cheek were removed and rebuilt using tissue from his scalp and ear. He’s also had multiple smaller surgeries to his face, arm, back, and leg.
Even after 30 rounds of radiation, topical chemotherapy, and over $72,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, doctors still don’t know if the cancer is gone.
If he’s cancer-free, Fred will need 1 to 5 reconstructive surgeries just to breathe normally through his nose again. If not, more treatments and surgeries are ahead.
Since his kidney transplant in 2015, Fred’s medical bills have totaled over $10 million. The financial burden is crushing.
Fred and his wife Sandy live modestly in Mesa, Arizona with their two golden retrievers. They just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary and are proud parents to two sons, David and Dylan.
Though unable to work, Fred continues to serve others—mentoring men, supporting kidney transplant groups, and volunteering at church.
