Multiage classrooms have unique benefits that positively impact students every day. A multiage classroom is not without its challenges, though. Within the same classroom, we have students reading between the third grade level and some approaching college level reading. This creates a unique challenge when it comes to reading assessments. Most typical reading assessments end at grade 8, when many of our middle school students are already reading at that level in sixth grade. Paper and pencil versions of reading assessments can take weeks of instructional time to administer, and up to 30 hours to score for our 140 students.
Freckle Education is a web based subscription that has fiction and non fiction articles, skills practice, and benchmark assessments that range in level from early reader, all the way through 12th grade. We have been using the free version in our classrooms for a little over a year, and the students love it. It's easy to use, and it's even fun!
The school subscription offers extensive data reporting, including leveling, and standards based reporting, with the ability to assign individual, targeted practice. Students can pop on every other week or so and read a few articles, and it gives us, their teachers, incredibly useful data.
Of course, such powerful reporting and tools come with a price. For a school level subscription for grades 4-8 (a minimum school subscription covers 100 students) is $2200. Broken down, though, it's just a little less than $15 per student, the cost of 1 paperback book per student per year.
For the cost of one paperback book per student, our students can practice reading comprehension, phonics, and word study, with activities tied to the common core standards, and we can receive regular and relevant reporting.
Thank you in advance for supporting our campaign and sharing with those who would also be interested in supporting!
