Fran's new Powerchair fund

Donation protected
Hi! If you've not met me before, I'm Fran. I'm late 40's. I'm an independent artist (a retired NHS health professional) and a mum and wife.

A few years back my amazing friends and family helped me crowdfund towards a wheelchair. But unfortunately, wheelchairs wear out and sometimes we need ones with different features as our needs change.

My current chair was 2nd hand when I bought it and is really struggling now, so the time has come to buy a new one.

I've raised 2/3 of the amount needed so far, but I'd really appreciate any help to reach my final target. Thank you so much!

Q&A

1. Don't you get wheelchairs for free on the NHS?

Generally speaking, no. NHS Wheelchair Services does exist and I do have a manual chair from them, but I can't self propel in a wheelchair due to my neurological issues and I don't meet the NHS criteria for a powerchair.

2. Can't your disability benefits pay for a powerchair?

The whole of my mobility allowance goes to pay for my WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) on Motability. There is none left over. Basically, your allowance can pay for either leasing a vehicle or a wheelchair/scooter. But not both.

3. Why do you need this powerchair now?

My current powerchair has many faults and has regular failures. I need a powerchair to maintain my quality of life and continue to work and be the best parent I can to my daughter.

4. Have you tried other funding sources?

Yes I have. So far none have granted me funds, partly because most have run out for the year. Also others would take far too long to award anything. I'll keep trying though!

Thanks so much,

Fran
