UPDATE / REDUCED GOAL: BECAUSE FRANK DIDN'T STAY A 3RD NIGHT IN THE PET HOSPITAL, THE BILL WAS REDUCED AND IT'S REFLECTED IN THE NEW GOAL.

Frank was never really “owned.” He was the kind of cat that quietly belonged to everyone.

He started as a stray, but over time became a beloved part of our neighborhood — showing up for affection and companionship, bringing joy wherever he wandered. A neighbor took him in and cared for him, but Frank still lived mostly outdoors and made his rounds as the neighborhood cat. My wife had been laid off months earlier, so she spent a lot of time with Frank in our backyard, and before long, both of us had fallen in love with this little guy.

On Saturday, January 17th, everything changed.

Frank was lethargic and clearly in pain. We reached out to his caretaker neighbor and learned he was out of town, but a house sitter quickly rushed Frank to the emergency vet. He was diagnosed with FIC, a life-threatening urinary blockage, and his kidneys were beginning to shut down. The veterinarian told us the only options were immediate emergency treatment or humane euthanasia.

We drove to the ER vet to say goodbye.

We were sitting in the “grieving room” saying goodbye to a cat that technically wasn’t even ours. The caretaker neighbor gave us permission to make the decision about Frank’s fate, and watching my wife’s heart break in that moment, I knew I couldn’t walk away without trying.

They had already placed the IV for euthanasia and gave us a few final minutes. In those last moments, our hearts wouldn’t let him go. I told my wife that I’ve taken bigger gambles in my life — and that we needed to give Frank a fighting chance.

At 3:45 PM that day, we told the veterinary staff we had changed our minds. They rushed him into emergency surgery to begin the life-saving procedure.

We put the nearly $6,990 ER bill on our credit card, trusting that animal lovers might want to help give this little guy a second chance. My life got laid off last year, so things have already been "tight" for us financially, but we were trusting that the hearts of many animal lovers would want to help and so many have.

Today, Frank is no longer a neighborhood stray. He is officially part of our family and recovering in our home.

We are incredibly grateful to his former caretaker, who went above and beyond for him before we stepped in. None of this would have happened without his care and support.

We’re continuing to raise funds to help offset the emergency medical expenses that saved Frank’s life. Every dollar raised goes directly toward his veterinary bills and ongoing care. Anything raised beyond his medical expenses will be donated to local pet organizations that help families facing similar emergency situations.

We are committed to full transparency and have posted receipts and updates on this page so you can follow Frank’s healing journey. You can also follow Frank's journey on Instagram: @frank.the.fighter

Thank you for being part of Frank’s second chance story. Your generosity, encouragement, and love helped turn a goodbye into a new beginning.

With gratitude,
Mike & Shannon
